Inchya Road – RJ McLeod

In November 2011 Shay Murtagh Precast manufactured and delivered 10 UAN culvert assemblies on behalf of RJ McLeod contractors for Inchyra Road. Each assembly consisted of an upper and lower U-section to form a 5.7m by 2.4m culvert. Each U-section weighed 13.5T and was 1.941m long. All culvert units had a section thickness of 300mm. The finished culvert run was 19.5m long.

Two 6.3m long head walls were also installed on the end culvert units and each head wall weighed 5.5T. Six precast wing walls were also manufactured for the culvert approaches. These had a section thickness of 250mm and varied in height from 2m to 3.95m and had a maximum weight of 9.25T.

Shay Murtagh Precast like to evolve as the market demands and with that so does our services. Our website www.shaymurtagh.co.uk is a critical link to our Clients and keeps them informed of latest exhibitions, projects and new products through our Blog. On request we have created a sign up for the Blog page so as new articles are posted they get an automatic update through email. There is also an un-subscribe button if you wish to cancel the sign up however there is usually only 2-4 blog posts per month giving relevant information on the Company, our projects and products. Another new feature is our MAILBOX. Information and in particular drawings have been getting larger with more information and detail at design and costings stages. The MAILBOX which is situated at the top of our home page allows you to upload your documents securely and it sends them to our servers. These are then transferred directly by our IT Department to the relevant person. Pre-stressed Concrete box beams for Haxton Bridge, Wiltshire

Ringway Construction appointed Shay Murtagh Precast their manufacturer for the Haxton Bridge Project. We manufactured the precast elements which assembled consisted of nine internal solid pre-stressed box beams and two outer pre-stressed edge beams which were 15.4m long. The internal beams were 495mm wide by 700mm deep and weighed 11.4T.

The edge beams incorporated a second stage factory cast pour to provide the required external profile. This increased the edge beam width to 773mm and extended to 415mm beyond the beam ends. The edge beam weighed 19.9T including the second stage concrete pour. Projecting link reinforcement was provided along the sides of the beams to enable an insitu shear key to be poured on site.

Delivery was completed by the Shay Murtagh Precast logistics team and the Wiltshire project was completed on schedule requested by Client.

TECHNICAL MANUAL FOR PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BRIDGE BEAMS

The Next Edition

The Shay Murtagh Technical Manual for Pre-stressed Concrete Bridge Beams was released in January of 2011 and has been very well received within the industry. The manual has proven to be a valuable tool for UK and Irish bridge engineers in the preliminary design of bridges and other structures carrying Eurocode compatible vehicular loading. Shay Murtagh Precast is now in the process of developing Edition 2 of the manual where several enhancements will be made to the Technical Manual, taking on board many of the recommendations presented by users of the manual.

We will also be adding technical details including span tables to facilitate use of W-Beams as they have become an increasingly popular and cost effective beam to use within the design of the modern day bridge structure. We have also received several requests for greater detail on the cross section dimensions for MY, TY and U beams and we anticipate also adding further information on these tables.

The Technical Manual for Pre-stressed Concrete Bridge Beams show span tables which are generic and therefore conservative by necessity. The noted achievable spans will typically increase significantly for bridges with any of the following structural characteristics:

Continuous spans
Integral substructures
Large overall deck widths (particularly if this includes substantial footpaths, medians and rubbing strips)

Septic Tank – Assessed and Certified

With the new proposed EU and Government legislation in relation to septic tanks due to come into force over the coming months Shay Murtagh Precast have undergone rigorous testing of our septic tank unit. The units were tested and certified to the new standard EN12566 Part 1.

The tanks were delivered to Aachen Germany where they were set up and tested in PIA Gmbh specialist testing facility. The tanks were subject to a water tightness test and a hydraulic efficiency test. In both examinations the septic tank performed exceptionally well with it passing the water tightness test and exhibiting a hydraulic efficiency of over 99%. Both full reports are available . Having completed this certification process Shay Murtagh Precast remains one of the key suppliers of septic tanks to the market place and provide customers with the necessary certification and high quality product for their required projects.

Kilmallock OB292m – Overbridge

Shay Murtagh Precast are long standing precast concrete suppliers to Irish Rail. In June 2011 we supplied three portal frame assemblies for a new overbridge at Kilmallock, Co Limerick to the main contractor PJ Hegarty and Sons. Each portal assembly consisted of an inverted U-shaped portal bridge unit which was supported on two base leg units.

The portal bridge unit weighed 59T and each of the support base leg units weighed 12T. The overall size of the portal was 6m high by 15m wide clear span. A longitudinal rebate with projecting reinforcement was provided in the portal roof units to enable the casting of an insitu stitch between adjacent portals. Ten parapet units each weighing 5.6T also formed part of the contract. The parapet units were connected to the edge roof portals by way of an insitu concrete stitch.

Projecting reinforcement was also provided in the bottom of the wall units to enable the casting of an insitu base stitch. Shay Murtagh Precast had design responsibility for all the precast units including design of all associated temporary propping works. Shay Murtagh Precast worked closely with Irish Rail and PJ Hegarty & Sons to ensure completion of all precast installation and final project within the strict possession times allowed.

Spectator Stand for Coralstown/Kinnegad GAA

Shay Murtagh Ltd recently completed a spectator stand for Coralstown / Kinnegad GAA . The stand represents the pinnacle in the club’s recent development of facilities which are nowe considered one of the best in the County.
Shay Murtagh Ltd was fully responsible for the design, manufacture and installation of the spectator stand along with all ancillary construction and earthworks. The stand itself was designed for a sitting capacity of 105 fully covered seats with covered wheel-chair and standing capacity.

All precast concrete structural elements of the stand were cast in Shay Murtagh’s purpose built precast manufacturing facility and transported to site where they were carefully assembled by our own specialist precast erection team. The precast system provided by Shay Murtagh Precast ensured very quick and easy assembly on site without any requirement of labour intensive in-situ concrete pours and also ensured a high quality concrete finish.

The stand itself is full accessible for disabled viewing with the provision of ramps. Since its completion the stand has played an important spectator role in the Club who are hosting a series of county club games.

FP McCann – Irish salt mines

Shay Murtagh Precast recently manufactured and supplied U-channel and cover slab units to Irish Salt Mines Project to main contractors FP McCann Ltd.. The U-section and cover slab formed a reclaim tunnel at the Irish Salt Mines Kilroot facility in Carrickfergus. The units supplied to date complete Phase 01 of the works with over 75 linear metres delivered to site.

Durability was a major consideration as the units are located in a corrosive environment and therefore 36% Ground Granulated Blastfurnace Slag Cement (GGBS) was used in the concrete mix design. This combined with 45mm cover to the reinforcement provided a 50 year design life for exposure class XD3.

The cover slabs also incorporated special openings to accommodate a loading chute and the system was designed for a substantial surcharge load due the self weight of the salt above as well as superimposed live loading.

The channel had internal dimensions of 3.2m wide and 2.4m high with a section thickness of 300mm. The cover slabs were 400mm thick and all units were manufactured in 2m modules. FP McCanns liaised with our logistics team for seamless delivery for installation
