Network Rail’s vision for faster, more frequent rail services between the region’s main cities as well as plans to electrify the railway between Manchester, Liverpool, Huyton and Wigan commenced work in early January 2012. As part of Network Rails programme of upgrading and replacing infrastructure, Carillion Construction Ltd was awarded the project to replace the life expired bridge deck of Bolton Road Overbridge. The project on the A579 north of Atherton involved demolishing the deck of the existing bridge and replacing utilising a series of track possessions.

The replacement of the Dundee Port access bridge is part of the wider aim to improve access to Dundee Port primarily for HGV traffic. Stannergate Bridge’s capacity was restricted to 33T. This restriction along with other proposed junction improvements will allow for easier access to the trunk road network.
