St. Columba Students Visit Shay Murtagh HQ

The Shay Murtagh team were delighted to welcome students from St Columba College yesterday for an in-depth tour of our state-of-the-art facility. The fifth-year students were given an exciting look behind the scenes of precast concrete design and manufacturing. The day consisted of an introductory presentation on the company’s history, capabilities and most illustrious projects, followed by an extensive tour of the factory and “Day in the Life” experience with key team members.

The students were fascinated to learn about the Shay Murtagh Group’s companies – Shay Murtagh Precast, Shay Murtagh Limited, Alcrete Building Systems, Evans Concrete Products and Structural Research. They were given a comprehensive look at the design, manufacture, logistics and installation process and then given an extensive tour of the factory by Operations Manager Donal McGovern and Production Manager Fergal O’Neill. The students were then split into groups and got to spend time with key team members from Quality, Engineering, Project Management and Design. From this, they gained an understanding of the importance of education and different routes that can be taken from apprenticeships to 3rd level, full or part-time which assist in gainful employment and successful careers.

Shay Murtagh has partnered with St. Columba College as part of the Skills @ Work Programme; a scheme designed to educate students about working life after education. Studies have shown that when students can see a clear link between education and work they are more likely to complete their Leaving Certificate and pursue further education. St. Columba’s visit to Shay Murtagh’s facility has been the second stage of the programme and we are very much looking forward to stage 3 – the CV & Interview Preparation Workshop.
