Shay Murtagh Precast recently completed a project for CA Blackwell to design, manufacture and deliver two precast box culverts with wing walls and head beams. To create a flood relief system for the Lee Moor road diversion in Plymouth.
The new road, designed to alleviate traffic to a narrow section of the local road. To provide a safe, modern link to the local Drakelands tungsten mine and china clay quarry. Situated approximately 10km from Plymouth city, the Drakelands mine is one of the largest concentrations of tungsten in the world.
Shay Murtagh Precast technical team undertook the design of the two culvert runs. To meet the specific loadings and site conditions. After the Clients approval of the design calculations and production and lifting drawings, manufacturing of the 35 No. culvert boxes, 24 No. wingwalls and 4 No. headwalls commenced.
Each 5.5m wide x 2.8m high precast concrete box units weighed 27 tonnes. They incorporated a bespoke fish pass tailored to the local environment. Shay Murtagh Precast’s transportation fleet undertook the 800 kilometre journey from our factory in Raharney, Co. Westmeath to the site in Plymouth.
A 200 tonne mobile crane required to lift each unit into place.
Shay Murtagh Precast’s flexibility to meet the specific requirements of each client and customer. This meant that these made-to-order box culverts met the specific needs of this Project. Our in-house design team were able to provide the structural expertise necessary. To ensure our customers receive a complete package of precast concrete services.
