hay Murtagh Precast were delighted to be awarded by Main Contractor, BAM Nuttall, to support in the construction of an £85 million concrete deck extension over the King George V Dock at London City Airport. The £480 million overall project included aircraft stands, a taxiway, and an extension to the existing terminal. The new deck extension adds 75,000m2 to the airport footprint, providing passengers with more space, facilities, flights.
This project changed London City Airport, with improved facilities for customers and enabling annual passenger numbers to grow from 4.5 million to 6.5 million per year. Shay Murtagh took control of the modelling and detailing of all precast elements. Much of the work involved redesigning clients proposals into workable precast solutions.
The project was delivered while the airport was fully operational with a large volume of deliveries made to the airside. In order to achieve clients’ stringent deadlines, manufacture and delivery was continued through the early stages of the COVID19 Pandemic. The runway/landing strip was designed for airplane loading. It was a unique and challenging install in a marine environment. Used 41% of GGBS utilised in the concrete, leading to significant reduction in carbon emissions.
